Clean Up

Written by Michael Zangerle on . Posted in Malaysia

September 24-26 Reef Check Malaysia and our Marine Park organized a weekend clean up. They asked for support of all operators on the islands. I signed up Watercolours with the PADI clean up day as well. As it is normal for a first time event not many operators attended, but we got around 40 volunteers together.

The weekend started with an information lesson how to collect „Crown-of-Thorn“ as they are poisonous.  As the human being is overfishing Napoleon wrasses and collecting Triton shells (both eat COTs) none is stopping the overpopulation off COT’s. They are destroying our coral reef as the algue and poly living inside the coral is their main food. So it was up to us to get a natural level again.

The marine park arrange a deep whole to burry them as they have a disgusting smell. We did collect 739 COT’s and could give the Coral Reef a little relive as it is stressed out after El Nino anyway. Now our coral gardens are recovering from bleaching and will be back to good when we are back next February.

For the afternoon beach clean ups at different beaches took place. We found diapers, cigarette butts, beer cans, plastic and glass bottles and much more. We filled so many bags with trash and litter. It is really sad that tourists and local leave trash wherever they want to. There are enough places here where you can dump your waste.

The next day everybody went diving to collect debris our off our reefs. Nadine did this very carefully as she collected a paper bag some days ago. She shook it because there are sometimes fishes inside the bags. When she got this out in the dive center something slimy touched her hand. And there it was – a blue ringed octopus.

Holy cow – I could not believe it. Luckily it was dead already. A bite of it may bring death within minutes. It is one of the most poisonous animals on this planet. It is only 7 small and shows flashing blue rings if it feels endangered.

This time we were lucky, we collected trash only. Our customers had loads of fun and enjoyed doing something good for our little paradise here. Next year we will do it again, hopefully with even more people?

Noname

Written by Michael Zangerle on . Posted in Malaysia

Last year we had a wildcat named POOR TOM. He was not very bg and had all the time flesh wounds. Michael took care off him even if he woke us in the middle off the nights running through our resort miauwing. He was looking for some love only. Since June he did not come anymore but a threetimes bigger cat which made him and our cats life not easy.

Our cats had every morning new flesh wounds which we took care off with antibiotics and some cream. One day our biggest cat Noname did not come for his breakfast. We new there must have been something strange happened as he is always eating. We found him under a chalet. He was very sensitive on his side but he became better and ate. Several days later the skin ruptured and some pus came out.

One of our fun divers was a vet and told us about a hematoma. He said we should wait two weeks before we go to an doctor. Unfortunately Noname stopped weating from one day to the next and hid underneath a chalet again. We had the feeling he wants to die.

Micha took him to the main land. Gismo had a similar hematoma so he took her as well. As Mike managed everything with the doctor he got the information about Noname. We got hold off the information of Nonames death two days later only.

We were really sad about his death, it took us a while to recover. We love you, Noname, Rest in piece old friend.

death of a customer

Written by Michael Zangerle on . Posted in Malaysia

Early July we had a young man here from the Netherlands. He and his girlfriend had a reunion with her family who where diving already with us.

He did not have a diving certification so he attended a course with us. For our freelance instructor Tom it was the first course as a newly certified instructor.

At the end of his first dive the student had a little headache but he did not drink enough during the day. Next day he felt a little sore and had some cramps in his lower legs. On his third day he had cough and spit a little blood. We gave him oxygen and looked at his symptoms. We went over to see the doctor in the village with him. The doc measured temperature and looked at his spit. He thought about tuberculosis.

The last ferry left the island already at 5pm so we asked the doctor several times if he should not take the ambulance boat to go to hospital on the main land. But the doc reassured that there is no hurry.  He should leave the next ferry 8am. Our student felt better and did not want to leave anyway.

At 9pm we were called down to see our customer again. He ahd difficulties breathing and was sweating extremely with fever. We arrange our boat and a taxi which brought him into the hospital immediately.

We were thinking about him every minute since. His girlfriend was completely relaxed, drank a beer and was eating while he lay on the floor in our dive center. She thought he is overreacting a little. She came back next morning to grab their luggage and informed us that he is doing ok, eating and talking. She would keep us posted.

She did not come back to us with any information so we dropped her one SMS which she answered immediately with a phone call. She told us that he had passed away. We were all very shocked. As we did a medical assessment including the countries where say have been it could have been Malaria, Tuberculosis, H1N1. Information enough to be scared!

She gave us information about his death. He had just eaten and was to be transported into a different hospital while she was her to get their stuff. The doctor did x-ray and blood tests before the transport and found nothing. Within seconds in the ambulance his lungs collapsed, he was bleeding into his lungs. She got this information when she arrive at the first hospital. He was dead already.

We did some research and found different stuff about H1N1 within Malaysia who died the same way. You can imagine how we do feel right now.

We were unsecure with every cough or headache or fever. Nadine became very sick days later with fever and all that shit. We tried to be relaxed but it was hard not to freak out. He was only 22 years and seemed to be healthy.

They did autopsies but did not find the reason for his death. We will never now it as he was cremated days later in Netherlands.

subsequent entry May 2011: A autopsy cleared that he died of Weil´s Desease. He died because he ate food with rats pee on it in China.
